What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy utilizes hypnosis as a primary approach for assisting clients in treating their condition. A Hypnotherapist differs from other therapists by focusing on the role of the subconscious to bring about the desired effect or change to the client's condition.

How does it work?
The Hypnotherapist helps you to reach a state of deep relaxation in a gentle and easily attainable way. While in this relaxed state, your conscious mind is still completely aware of what is going on throughout, but your subconscious is free to accept positive thoughts and ideas much more readily. This enables you to change fixed negative ideas into strong positive attitudes about yourself, your condition, and your life.

What is involved in a typical session?
The first part of a typical session is dedicated to gaining a deep knowledge of the client in terms of her personal and medical history so that the Hypnotherapist can develop the therapy with a correct understanding of the nature of the condition and how it affects the client. The Hypnotherapist will then explain the procedure fully to the client, and a realistic expectation of a result will be agreed between them. Various 'suggestibility' tests may then be done so that the most suitable method of hypnotic approach can be ascertained. The client will then be relaxed into a light hypnotic state so that the therapy may begin. A session may typically last one hour. Perhaps a little longer for the initial session. Sessions are usually relaxing and very enjoyable.

How long is the treatment?
An assessment of the length of the course likely to be required is generally ascertained during the initial session. The Hypnotherapist and client will always discuss this and if ongoing or further treatment is required this can then be undertaken subsequently. The Hypnotherapist may give the client some 'homework' in the form of listening to a recording of the session, or some relaxation exercises which can greatly augment the treatment programme.

When will a client start to see an improvement?
Usually, three weekly sessions are enough to instigate a discernable improvement in most treatable conditions. This will vary greatly from client to client of course. The responsible Hypnotherapist will be mindful of 'managing the expectations' of the client, and will repeatedly discuss progress with her.

What are the side effects?
Side-effects to Hypnotherapy are extremely rare.

Can it be used if pregnant or breastfeeding?
Hypnotherapy is completely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Does it interact with food/alcohol/medications?
Hypnotherapy is generally unaffected by food/alcohol/medications. The exceptions would be if a client was attempting to undergo therapy whilst actually under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A responsible Hypnotherapist would refuse to treat anyone in this condition.

Is there anyone who cannot have hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is contra-indicated where the client is suffering from a clinical mental illness. It is also not recommended for those suffering from severely impaired hearing for purely practical reasons.

What happens when the treatment course has finished?
When an agreed course has been completed, the Hypnotherapist will review the treatment with the client and see if further 'top-up' sessions might be indicated. He might also provide a programme for the client to follow at home to assist in the continual progress to wellbeing.

Special points about Hypnotherapy:

  • Hypnotherapy is very much a partnership between Therapist and Client. The input and co-operation of the client are essential to ensure a successful outcome
  • Hypnotherapy is completely safe. You cannot actually 'make' anybody do anything in hypnosis. Hypnosis cannot give anybody power over the person who is hypnotised
  • Learning to relax and to reduce anxiety levels through hypnosis is greatly beneficial in all areas of health and wellbeing
  • Hypnotherapy can work highly effectively as an adjunct to any traditional medical treatment as well as alone
